Mercenaries 2

One of my favorite accomplishments has been pulling off some humor by means of gameplay. Timing a punchline is really hard when the player has control of the pacing.  “The Devastator” was a fetch quest where the RPG-weilding Mercenary was sent to retrieve a classified weapon, only to find out The Devastator is a moped with a flower basket.

It was my way of adding some interest to what started as a simple fetch quest. In general, I’ve found that adding context is a great way to enhance any player actions. One of the many fun aspects of Mercs 2 was that I worked directly with the game’s story/dialogue writer to get VO for all the mission beats.

With Mercs 2, Pandemic wanted to show off the Havok physics engine. It was a radical idea to make everything in the game destructible. Engineering provided Lua hooks for triggering Havok events like impulses, and it provided a great deal of versatility for me as a Designer.  For the “River Cruise” mission I slapped a jet engine onto a motorboat.  For a mission that was really a lure to pull the player across the map, the Jet Boat added a lot more fun.
